Excelia Academy teaches AI, web and app development, PMP and IT skills through recorded courses. A video library alone doesn't make an academy — what makes it one is enrolment, progress, and a certificate an employer can actually check. We built all three, plus the portal instructors use to publish their own courses and the console the academy runs it from.

01 — The brief

The challenge

Excelia needed a platform that served three completely different audiences at once: students browsing, enrolling and working through lessons; instructors building and managing their own courses; and administrators approving applications, tracking payments and managing users. On top of that, a training certificate is worthless if nobody can verify it — so every certificate issued needed a public, tamper-resistant way for an employer to check it.

02 — What we built

The solution

We built a React and TypeScript single-page application on Firebase, with role-based access separating student, instructor and admin experiences. Students get a catalogue, enrolment, a personal dashboard and a lesson player; instructors get a portal to create and manage their courses; admins get a console for courses, users, payments and applications. Each completed course issues a certificate with a unique code that resolves at a public verification URL, so an employer can confirm it without contacting the academy.

03 — Method

How we got there

  1. 01Designed a Firestore data model across users, courses, lessons, enrolments, payments and certificates
  2. 02Built role-based routing and access control for student, instructor and admin experiences
  3. 03Shipped the student journey — catalogue, category filters, enrolment, dashboard and lesson player
  4. 04Built an instructor portal for creating, publishing and managing courses independently
  5. 05Built an admin console for course approval, user management, payments and applications
  6. 06Implemented public certificate verification, where a unique code resolves to a shareable proof URL
  7. 07Added a pending/approved/rejected approval workflow across course and application submissions

04 — Proof

What changed

  • Three role-based experiences — student, instructor and admin — in one platform
  • Publicly verifiable certificates, checkable by employers without contacting the academy
  • Self-serve instructor portal, so new courses ship without developer involvement
  • Approval workflow giving the academy control over what gets published
